The Silver Mountains are the great central spine of [[Valtorra]] — a double range of grey granite that runs north to south down the heart of the continent and divides it cleanly into an eastern and a western half. Between the two ridges lies the long, sheltered Silver Valley, and beneath them lies the wealth that built a kingdom: some of the richest gem and ore deposits on the continent. For most of recorded history the range was the seat of a single unified dwarven realm; for the last fifty years it has been an occupied province of the [[Valtorran Empire|Crimson Empire]], its holds worked by conscript labour and its old crown reduced to Imperial regency.
## Geography & Landscape
The Silver Mountains rise through the centre of [[Valtorra]], a great twin range running the length of the continent from north to south. To the west the land falls away into the arid [[Xericana Sands]]; to the east it descends into the fertile [[Luminor Plains]]; in the north the range climbs toward the cold shoulder of the [[Borealia Forest]]. The two ridgelines run roughly parallel, and the ground they enclose is the Silver Valley — a long, sheltered trough of lake and meadow that runs the length of the range, warmer and greener than the bare stone above it would suggest.
At the very heart of the range stands [[Valfyria]], a great active volcano whose column of smoke is a landmark visible for a hundred miles across the central continent. Below the snowline the slopes are bare rock and scree, riddled with the gates, chimneys, and spoil-heaps of generations of dwarven mining; the deepest shafts run far beneath the peaks, following gem-veins down into the dark. The valley floor holds still mountain lakes and the only open sky the range affords, while the high passes between the ridges are choked with snow for much of the year and crossed only with care.

## History
The Silver Mountains were, for nearly two thousand years, the homeland of a single unified dwarven kingdom — one of the three great peoples who rebuilt [[Valtorra]] out of the long ruin of the [[Chaos Wars]], alongside the human Kingdoms of Old and the elves of [[Erivan Island]]. The dwarves seated their crown at [[Glimmerforge]], carved their wealth out of [[Gemhold]], smelted it at [[Orespire]], and traded it through [[Silverdeep]] on the valley floor. For centuries a fragile peace held between mountain, plain, and island.
That peace ended a hundred years ago, when [[Empress Morganna Eventide]] came out of the eastern sea and took the continent city by city. The dwarven kingdom was conquered outright. Roughly fifty years into the occupation the dwarves rose in open rebellion; it failed, though the mining hold of [[Gemhold]] won the revolt's only lasting success. In the aftermath the Empire imposed the conscription that defines dwarven life to this day: every dwarf, on reaching eighteen, is sent down to the gem mines to serve until twenty-five. The old royal dynasty fell with the rebellion, and Glimmerforge has been governed by Imperial-appointed regents ever since.
## Peoples & Powers
The Silver Mountains are dwarven country first and foremost — the conquered heart of a people who have never forgotten what they lost. Their craft traditions, their sacred institutions, and their stonework endure under the occupation, but on terms they did not choose. Gnomes are scattered through the range as well, some among the larger holds, and the finest of them are associated with the Prismatic Academy at [[Glimmerforge]], of which the artificer [[Belinda Bubblegum]] is a graduate.
Real power, though, sits with the [[Valtorran Empire|Crimson Empire]]. The conquered holds are run through Imperial regents and overseers, and the range's output — ore, worked steel, and above all gems — is bent toward the Empire's military needs. The conscript mines are the iron fact of life here: a labour system that touches every dwarven family and feeds the resentment that has already boiled over once and never fully cooled.
## Settlements & Sites
- [[Glimmerforge]] — the ancient dwarven capital and cultural heart of the range, carved deep into the western ridge and lit by a forge that has never gone out; now under Imperial regency.
- [[Gemhold]] — the great mining hold, built around one of the richest gem deposits on the continent and the site of the rebellion's only lasting success.
- [[Orespire]] — the forge city at the southern mouth of the Silver Valley, where ore from the deep shafts is smelted and worked.
- [[Silverdeep]] — the outward-facing surface city on the northern shore of a valley lake, where dwarven gems meet outside buyers.
- [[Valfyria]] — the great active volcano at the heart of the range, its smoke a landmark across the continent.
## Dangers
- Valfyria itself — an active volcano at the range's heart, with the tremors, ash, and venting that come with living in its shadow.
- The high country — avalanches off the snow-laden peaks, killing cold in the passes, and sheer falls for the careless or the lost.
- The deep mines — cave-ins, bad air, and the ordinary lethality of cutting gem-veins out of living rock, made worse by a conscription system that sends the young down whether they are ready or not.
- The Empire — for any dwarf, the heaviest hazard of all: forced service in the mines, and the swift, total reprisal that met the last rebellion and would meet the next.
## Significance
The Silver Mountains are the literal and economic backbone of [[Valtorra]] — the wall that splits the continent in two and the source of the gems and steel that arm the [[Valtorran Empire|Empire]]. They are also its deepest reservoir of grievance: a proud kingdom conquered and bound to the mines, where rebellion has already drawn blood once. Whoever controls the range controls the forges that supply the Empire's wars, and whoever loses the dwarves loses the means to fight them.
## Trivia
- The range is a true double spine — two parallel ridgelines, not one — and almost everything that matters about it happens in the sheltered Silver Valley between them rather than on the bare peaks themselves.
- Of the continent's four great peoples, the dwarves are the only one conquered and still living under their conquerors in their own homeland; the elves withdrew, the goblinoids were never truly held, and the humans were left their thrones as governors.
