Threaded by the [[Luminor River]] and crowned by the Imperial capital of [[Val Luminor]], the plains are at once the breadbasket of the realm and the seat of its power: the most numerous of the continent's peoples work this land, and from its heart the [[Valtorran Empire|Crimson Empire]] rules everything around it. ## Geography & Landscape The Luminor Plains occupy the centre-east of [[Valtorra]], broad temperate grasslands that roll from [[Val Aran]] at the northern treeline all the way down to [[Val Miriel]] in the south-east. The [[Silver Mountains]] wall the plains off to the west; the lesser [[Borealia Range]] and the boreal woodland of the [[Borealia Forest]] close them in to the north and east; and in the south-east the land runs down to the [[Gulf of Miriel]], where the [[Luminor River]] empties into the sea. It is open, gently rolling, well-watered country — the easiest land to cross and the richest to farm on the whole continent. The defining thread of the plains is the [[Luminor River]]. Rising in the [[Silver Mountains]] to the west, it runs across the breadth of the grasslands before reaching the sea at [[Val Miriel]], and at its midpoint it widens into the broad, slow channel where [[Val Luminor]] stands. Away from the river the plains are a patchwork of wheatfields, pasture, hedgerow, and small farming towns — among them [[Redhaven]], [[Nightstone]], [[Hillcrest]], [[Goldcrest]], and [[Ravencrest]] — laced together by the Imperial roads that carry the harvest toward the capital and the coast. ![[Luminor_Plains_Location_small.webp]] ## History The Luminor Plains have always been the most coveted ground on [[Valtorra]] — flat, fertile, and central — and so they have always been the seat of whoever ruled the continent. Through the long rebuilding that followed the [[Chaos Wars]], the plains were settled and farmed by humans and halflings alike, and the human Kingdoms of Old set their greatest cities at the edges of this central country. When [[Empress Morganna Eventide]] took the continent a hundred years ago, it was the plains and their cities that fell first and most completely. The Empire made [[Val Luminor]], at the heart of the grasslands, its capital, and the surrounding farmland the engine that feeds its garrisons and its armies. Of all the continent's regions, the plains are the most thoroughly held: open country offers nowhere to hide a rebellion, and the harvests are too vital for the Empire ever to loosen its grip here. What unrest exists runs quiet and underground. ## Peoples & Powers The plains are shared between humans and halflings. Humans hold the great cities and the politics; halflings farm most of the land and are, in effect, the breadbasket of the central continent — a largely peaceful folk whose labour keeps the Empire fed. The grasslands are the most numerous and densely settled part of [[Valtorra]], and the most ordinary: a country of farmers, carters, and townsfolk going about their lives beneath an authority few of them ever challenge openly. That authority is the [[Valtorran Empire|Crimson Empire]], and nowhere is it stronger. Ruling from [[Val Luminor]] under [[Empress Morganna Eventide]], the Empire keeps the plains tight — garrisons in the towns, the Imperial roads patrolled, the [[Hand of The Empire|Hands]] and the [[Voice of the Empire|Voices]] never far. The plains are the Empire's home ground, the one region it can least afford to lose and most completely controls. ## Settlements & Sites - [[Val Luminor]] — the Imperial capital, built on and around Eventide Isle where the [[Luminor River]] widens at the heart of the plains; seat of [[Empress Morganna Eventide]]. - [[Val Aran]] — the great walled city of the far north, standing at the plains' northern edge where the grassland meets the [[Borealia Forest]]. - [[Val Miriel]] — the south-eastern terminus, the continent's greatest port, built where the [[Luminor River]] empties into the [[Gulf of Miriel]]. - The farming towns — [[Redhaven]], [[Nightstone]], [[Hillcrest]], [[Goldcrest]], and [[Ravencrest]], the market and farming settlements scattered across the grasslands that work the land and carry the harvest toward [[Val Luminor]] and the coast. - [[Luminor River]] — the great waterway that threads the whole region, the Empire's spine of trade from the mountains to the sea. ## Dangers - The Empire itself — for the people of the plains the heaviest hazard is the order they live under: garrisons, steep taxes, conscription, and citizens who vanish in the night. - Open ground — the very openness that makes the plains rich makes them hard to cross unseen; there is little cover for a fugitive, a smuggler, or a rebel, and the Imperial roads are watched. - The edges — the threats of the plains tend to come from their borders rather than their heart: the undead taint that seeps from the deep [[Borealia Forest]] in the north, and the wilds beyond the [[Silver Mountains]] to the west. ## Significance The Luminor Plains are the centre of gravity of all [[Valtorra]] — the richest farmland, the busiest roads, the great river, and the capital itself, all in one region. Whoever holds the plains feeds the continent and commands it; this is precisely why the [[Valtorran Empire|Empire]] seated its power here and why it will never let its grip slacken. For the same reason, the plains are where the campaign's stakes are highest and its rebellion hardest to wage: there is no harder ground on the continent to fight the Empire than its own heartland. ## Trivia - The plains carry the same name as the river that crosses them and the capital that crowns them — Luminor — a thread that runs from the water to the city to the whole heartland country around it. - For all their importance, the plains are the least dramatic landscape on [[Valtorra]]: no peaks, no deep forest, no killing sea — just open, fertile, ordinary country, which is exactly what makes them worth holding.
