More than a place to buy and sell, it is the city's truest expression of itself — a people's market, run by no lord and no garrison, where ordinary citizens come to trade their own wares and try to make something of themselves. For most of the city, a visit is simply an ordinary part of the week. ## Location & Geography The market runs along a long stretch of the [[Luminor River]] where it cuts north-west to south-east through the heart of [[Val Miriel]], gathered around the great span of [[Valena's Bridge]]. It spreads across both banks — the western half and the eastern half formally named River Market (West) and River Market (East) — though in practice the two are simply the ends of one continuous market reaching across the water, sharing a single character rather than dividing into separate districts. Stalls, awnings, and trestle tables crowd the riverside and the bridge approaches, with flat-bottomed boat-shops moored along the banks. Because the river touches everyone's life and nearly the whole city passes through at one time or another, the market has grown to hold something for every purse and every need. ## A Market of the People For all that one can buy food and produce here — much of it arriving on the boat-shops that drift down the [[Luminor River]] from the plains upstream, selling straight off the water — the River Market is not just another fish market. Its real character is the citizen-seller. It is the place ordinary people come to sell their own wares and creative work, the crafts and goods they make with their own hands, hoping to build a name and make something of themselves. As much as a place of trade, it is a place of opportunity and ambition, where anyone with something to offer can bring it to the river and try their luck. It belongs to those people, too. The market is run by no Imperial authority, carries no licensing or stall-charter from the governorship, and sees little of the city guard or the [[Red Bastion]] — an unusual freedom in a city the [[Valtorran Empire|Empire]] otherwise holds so tightly. Instead it governs itself: precisely because the market matters so much to nearly everyone who depends on it, the people keep it in order, and crime stays uncommon even without soldiers standing watch. ## Atmosphere The River Market is open, lively, and comfortable — busy without being dangerous, a welcoming sprawl that draws the whole city to the water's edge. It is one of the things that makes [[Val Miriel]] feel like a home to its people rather than a garrison town, and on an ordinary day it shows the city at its warmest and most hopeful. ## [[The Bloody Nails|Campaign: The Bloody Nails]] #### [[Session 20 - The Streets of Val Miriel]] While exploring the city, one of the party was sprayed with a glittery dust by a vendor in the market, sending them into a swirl of strange visions — a rare shady note in an otherwise honest place. #### [[Session 22 - Inferno at Serenity Plaza]] An anti-Empire rally in the adjoining [[Serenity Plaza]] erupted into violence: an explosion tore through the square and birthed two fire elementals, which the party fought amid the burning market stalls.
