As old as the city above it, the Underrun is monumental stonework at its core and a filth-ridden warren at its edges — officially the city's water and sewer system, and unofficially a hidden road for anyone with reason to move through Val Miriel unseen. ## Location & Geography The Underrun lies directly beneath Val Miriel, threading under the streets of the great port at the mouth of the [[Luminor River]]. Nearest its core the architecture is grand and ancient — broad vaulted cisterns and reservoirs of weathered stone, fed and flushed by the river. Further out, the grand works give way to cruder maintenance tunnels: cramped, filth-ridden, and in places fully submerged, the passages run outward until they reach the open land beyond the walls. One such route ends in a dry dead-end cavern with a fissure in its ceiling opening onto the wintry grasslands north of the city. ## History & Use The Underrun dates from the early construction of Val Miriel. As one of the ancient human Kingdoms of Old, the city has stood for over a thousand years, and its core cisterns are original to that founding age — monumental work that predates the [[Valtorran Empire]] entirely. The outward maintenance tunnels are later, cruder, and far less cared for, which is why a traveller passing from the heart of the network toward the walls watches the architecture degrade from grand to grim around them. Officially the Underrun is functional civic infrastructure: the reservoir and sewer system that supplies and drains the city. Unofficially it serves a great many others — smugglers and assorted criminals use its tunnels as a concealed way through and under Val Miriel. The clearest example is the [[Order of Ravens - Val Miriel|Order of Ravens]], whose Nest is built directly into the network and connects to it by a concealed sliding door, giving the chapter a quiet way out of the city. ## Dangers The maintained core beneath the city is relatively safe; oozes and other vermin only rarely stray into it. The real hazard lies in the neglected outer tunnels leading away from the walls, where the filth and damp draw such creatures — heat-hungry brown mould and corrosive black puddings among them. ## [[The Bloody Nails|Campaign: The Bloody Nails]] #### [[Session 28 - The Underrun]] Fleeing Val Miriel for good, the party were guided into the Underrun by [[Trak Aeris]] of the [[Order of Ravens - Val Miriel|Order of Ravens]]. The grand architecture soon forced them into a flooded maintenance tunnel, where they survived heat-hungry brown mould and a costly ambush by corrosive black puddings before climbing out through a ceiling fissure into the grasslands north of the city.
