Long the city's busiest market plaza, it is large enough to swallow a crowd — and in recent years that has made it the place where the city's anger gathers and finds a voice. The name is a relic of gentler beginnings, increasingly at odds with what the square has become. ## Location & Geography The plaza lies on the eastern bank of [[Val Miriel]], a short way off the [[Divine Way]] and within easy reach of the [[Val Miriel River Market|River Markets]] — it is the closest large open space to the markets, so the city's foot traffic naturally filters through it. It is a large, broad square of worn cobblestone, with avenues opening into it from each side. At its centre stands a fountain crowned by a statue of a bird in flight, carved as though it were bursting upward out of the water. Market stalls once ringed the open centre, though far fewer stand there now. ## History The square is older than the [[Valtorran Empire]]'s rule. It began as a place of peace and contemplation, set on or beside the [[Divine Way]], the city's quarter of faith and learning. Over the generations its purpose drifted from quiet sanctuary toward commerce and civic life, until the contemplative ground had become a working market and gathering-place — leaving the name "Serenity" as the last trace of what it once was. ## A Stage for Rebellion Geography, more than any decree, made Serenity Plaza the city's gathering ground: as the largest open space beside the River Markets, it is simply where Val Miriel comes together — and so where dissent finds its audience. As imperial pressure on the city has grown, the square has filled again and again with anti-Empire crowds, their chants rolling out across the cobbles: that they will tear down the garrisons, dismantle the walls, and liberate their people. Today the plaza is contested ground rather than a working marketplace. People come to leave signs of rebellion and to hold gatherings against the [[Valtorran Empire|Empire]], and trade has thinned as confrontations here have become common. Since the fire that scarred the square it has been bound up, in the public mind, with the rise of the [[The Bloody Nails|Bloody Nails]] in the capital — it was here that the movement's bloody-nail symbol first burned its way into the city's attention. ## [[The Bloody Nails|Campaign: The Bloody Nails]] #### [[Session 20 - The Streets of Val Miriel]] Moving through the crowded markets, the party first caught wind of Serenity Plaza as the whisper of a gathering to come — an early sign of the political unrest simmering beneath the city's surface. #### [[Session 22 - Inferno at Serenity Plaza]] The party stumbled into an anti-Empire rally in the square. [[Dondar]] branded a bloody-nail symbol across the wall behind the speaker and the crowd took up the chant "Nail by nail!"; as Imperial soldiers moved to arrest the orator, a massive explosion tore through the plaza, incinerating the guards and birthing two raging fire elementals. The party fought the entities down amid the burning market stalls, and were left standing alone in the smouldering wreckage of the square.
