The Red Bastion is the red-walled fortress that crowns the head of the Military Way in [[Val Miriel]], seat of the Imperial garrison that keeps the law of the whole [[Gulf of Miriel]]. Its crimson walls fly the colours of the [[Valtorran Empire]] over the old grey stone of the Kingdoms of Old — a deliberate reminder, visible across the city, of who now holds it.
## Location & Geography
The Red Bastion stands on the high western ground of [[Val Miriel]], on the western bank of the [[Luminor River]], at the head of the Military Way — the causeway that descends from the fortress through the soldiers' quarter of barracks, drill yards, and mercenary trade down to the rough Grey Docks at the water's edge. Its red curtain walls and towers dominate the western skyline, set apart from the grey stone of the rest of the city, so that the garrison's seat is the first thing the eye finds on that side of the river.
## The Imperial Garrison
Because Val Miriel is the supply port for the Imperial capital of [[Val Luminor]] and the place from which the Empire holds the law of the entire [[Gulf of Miriel]], the garrison housed in the Red Bastion is no token presence but a real and watchful military weight.
