Miriel Keep is the great fortress that crowns the western bank of [[Val Miriel]], seat of [[Governor Tarlis Evandron]] and the ancestral home of House Miriel, the surrendered royal line whose name the city still carries. Ancient grey walls raised by the old sea-kingdom stand blended with the harder lines of newer Imperial fortification, so that the keep wears its history plainly — a crown that has changed hands without ever changing its silhouette. Once known as Miriel Castle, it remains the proud face of the city's rule, looking out over the [[Gulf of Miriel]] from the head of the [[Royal Way]].
## Location & Geography
Miriel Keep stands on the high northern ground of the western bank of [[Val Miriel]], the seaward port-city at the mouth of the [[Luminor River]] on the south-eastern coast of [[Valtorra]]. From its walls the [[Royal Way]] — one of the four great causeways that run the length of the city — descends southward through the district of old money and nobility toward the river, making the keep the literal head of the quarter it commands. To one flank lies the walled royal cemetery of [[Miriel's Rest]], wedged between the river and the keep's curtain wall; beyond the ramparts the land falls away to the open water of the [[Gulf of Miriel]].
It is a sprawling thing rather than a single tower — a layered fortress of weathered grey Miriel stone overbuilt and reinforced with Imperial works, its older round towers and long curtain walls braced by sharper, more modern ramparts and a heavy gatehouse at the head of the Royal Way. The result is a fortress that reads as two ages at once: the ancestral castle of a sea-kingdom underneath, and the hard apparatus of an occupying Empire laid over the top.
## History
The keep began as Miriel Castle, raised by House Miriel in the long centuries when [[Val Miriel]] was one of the six human Kingdoms of Old — the sea-facing crown whose wealth came from the ocean and the trade up the [[Luminor River]]. For a thousand years it was the royal seat from which the Miriel line ruled the gulf, and its walls are the oldest part of the city's silhouette still standing.
When the [[Valtorran Empire]] brought the old kingdoms to heel roughly a century ago, Val Miriel's crown was reduced to a governorship under the Empress's velvet-glove arrangement — the ruling family kept on as governors rather than executed. The castle changed with the crown: Imperial fortifications were worked into the old Miriel walls, and the royal seat became the Governor's Keep. It passed into the hands of [[Governor Tarlis Evandron]], who came to power through his marriage to the line's last heir, Vallarra Miriel; she died delivering their daughter, [[Vallania Miriel]], and Tarlis has held the keep — and through it the gulf — in the Miriel name ever since.
## Seat of Power
Miriel Keep is the administrative and ceremonial heart of the city's rule, where [[Governor Tarlis Evandron]] governs Val Miriel and, through its command of the port, the wider [[Gulf of Miriel]]. His daughter [[Vallania Miriel]] keeps her place beside him there. The keep is the soft half of the Empire's grip on the city — a beloved old name ruling from an ancient royal castle, so the people see one of their own on the seat rather than a conqueror's appointee. The hard half stands across the city at the [[Red Bastion]], the Imperial garrison; between the velvet of the keep and the iron of the bastion, Val Miriel is held.
## The Hidden War Room
The keep keeps a secret beneath its dignity. A concealed passage runs from its underbelly to the ancestral crypt under [[Miriel's Rest]], the royal cemetery at its flank, descending to a hidden war room where [[Governor Tarlis Evandron]] holds council away from Imperial eyes — a meeting place chosen because no one questions the dead. It is from this room, reached through the tombs of his late wife's family, that Tarlis works against the very Empire he ostensibly serves.
## [[The Bloody Nails|Campaign: The Bloody Nails]]
#### [[Session 21 - The Governor's Daughter]]
At midnight the party was led to [[Miriel's Rest]] by a hooded figure who revealed herself as [[Vallania Miriel]], the governor's daughter — the same woman they had earlier rescued from a goblin stronghold near [[Darmouth]]. Through a secret passage in her family crypt she brought them down into the keep's hidden war room for a clandestine audience with her father. Initially hostile and certain his sedition had been exposed, [[Governor Tarlis Evandron]] was swayed by his daughter's word and the party's part in toppling [[Skyreach]]. There, beneath the fortress, he laid out a desperate strategy — for the party to act as his independent agents and unite the fractured old kingdoms of [[Valtorra]] against the Empire — arming them with encrypted Sending Stones and a map of potential allies. It was the meeting that opened the wider world before them.
## Trivia
- The keep was once called Miriel Castle; the change of name to the Governor's Keep marks the political demotion of the Miriel crown to an Imperial governorship, even though the same family still holds the same walls.
