The Military Way descends from the [[Red Bastion]], the red-walled seat of the Imperial garrison, down the western bank to the rough Grey Docks at the water's edge. It is the city's hardest strip: it begins in martial order and degrades, street by street, into the most dangerous waterfront in Val Miriel. ## Location & Geography The Military Way runs the length of the city's western bank, on the same side of the [[Luminor River]] as the Royal Way, beginning at the [[Red Bastion]] on the high northern ground and falling toward the gulf. At its head, the streets are all martial order — drill yards, barracks, and the clatter of training, with the Empire's red colours flying over the old grey stone of the Kingdoms of Old. The further down toward the water one goes, the rougher it grows, until the Way spills out into the Grey Docks: the working, dangerous edge of the city, where honest labour and outright crime crowd the same wharves. ## The Quarter This is where the city's muscle gathers — soldiers, mercenaries, smiths, and the trades that arm and serve them. People who actually fight come here to buy and to hire, not to be impressed by ceremony. A handful of establishments give the Way its character: - The hall of the [[Green Gryphons - Val Miriel|Green Gryphons]] mercenary guild, a clearing-house for contracts, muscle, and the city's quieter problems, run by Captain [[Porta Hale]]. - [[The Coal]], a messy, working-grade smithy whose arms and armour quietly outclass the showpieces of the Artisan Way, kept by the master smith [[Ingrid]]. - [[Fur and Fang]], a dim shop of cured hides, rare furs, claws, and mounted trophies. - The Rusty Anchor, a rough dockside tavern down by the Grey Docks — the place to buy a cheap drink and a cheaper rumour from the city's underbelly. ## [[The Bloody Nails|Campaign: The Bloody Nails]] #### [[Session 20 - The Streets of Val Miriel]] Outfitting themselves across the city, the party found honest steel at [[The Coal]] on the Military Way, where the smith [[Ingrid]] confirmed the Northern origins of [[Vaeleran]]'s greatsword and supplied the group with sturdy weapons. #### [[Session 26 - A Midnight Romp]] With the city under curfew, [[Kai]] — transformed into a giant grey elk with [[Dondar]] clinging to his back — sprinted down the Military Way toward the [[High Sept]] in a reckless dash for speed over stealth. The pair drew immediate pursuit, weathering a hail of crossbow bolts before the chase carried them to a headlong leap from [[Valena's Bridge]] into the river below.
