The **Emberspire** is the ancient, blackened tower that dominates the eastern skyline of [[Lighthaven]] — a relic of an age so distant the town was raised upon its ruins, and the single reason that town endures. When its great summit brazier is lit, a persistent enchantment causes the tower's crown to blaze with golden light, warding off the horrors that spill from the [[Darkwood]] pressing against the town's eastern streets. Its builders and its original purpose are long forgotten; the people of Lighthaven know only that the light must never go out.
## Location & Geography
The Emberspire stands at the eastern edge of [[Lighthaven]], a fog-shrouded frontier town in the far north-east of [[Valtorra]], where the streets climb toward the treeline of the [[Darkwood]] and the ground rises to meet the tower. It is the tallest and most commanding structure for miles — roughly a hundred and fifty feet of weathered, blackened stone, grand and faintly otherworldly, built of a dark material unlike anything else in the region and lighthouse-like in its silhouette. At its summit sits the great brazier that is the source of its light; at its base spreads the bustling **Embermarket**, whose vibrant stalls ring the tower in stark contrast to its grim, ancient presence.
A persistent and potent enchantment clings to the structure: within a few feet of the tower, magic simply fails — a permanent dispelling aura that snuffs out spells cast too close, a fact the curious and the unwary alike have learned the hard way.
## History
The Emberspire is older than memory. [[Lighthaven]] was built upon the ruins of a forgotten city whose name and origins have been lost entirely, and the Spire is the clearest relic of that vanished age — said to predate even the earliest recorded settlements in the region. Its makers left no record of why they raised it, and over the long centuries the townsfolk who gathered in its shadow simply inherited it, coming in time to depend on its light to hold back the [[Darkwood]] that had overgrown the land around them.
The secret of *how* to wake that light — the precise balancing of heat and luminosity that brings the brazier to the right pitch — has been preserved across generations by the **Emberwardens**, the keepers who tend the tower. To Lighthaven the Spire has become an "ancient protector" standing watch in the dark, honoured each midwinter in the town's great festival, the [[Emberlight Vigil]].
## Significance
The Emberspire is the heart of Lighthaven in the most literal sense: the town is a "haven" only because of the light the tower throws against the dark. When the Emberwardens raise the brazier correctly, the summit blazes and the monsters of the [[Darkwood]] are kept at bay; were it ever to fail, the town on the forest's edge would not last long. The whole rhythm of Lighthaven — its insular, watchful character, its window-lanterns set in solidarity with the Spire, its quiet reverence for the wardens — turns on that single fact.
The tower is also a wellspring of raw arcane power, though it surrenders it only once a year. At midnight on the [[Emberlight Vigil|winter solstice]], golden energy spirals up the structure and bursts radiant from its crown — and that annual surge can, by those who know how, be tapped. The artificer [[Belinda Bubblegum]] built her years in Lighthaven around exactly this, engineering a siphon to drink a fraction of the Spire's power at the height of the festival.
## The Emberwardens
The Emberspire is tended by the **Emberwardens**, the keepers entrusted with the secret of lighting and maintaining its brazier. They are a quiet, respected presence in [[Lighthaven]], wearing dark grey robes with a gold stripe down the back in their daily duties and deep golden cloaks during the [[Emberlight Vigil]]. They work within the tower itself, and some make their homes inside it — making the Spire not merely a monument but an inhabited keep at the centre of the town's defence.
## [[The Bloody Nails|Campaign: The Bloody Nails]]
#### [[Session 29 - Lighthaven Awaits]]
[[The Bloody Nails]] arrived in [[Lighthaven]] as the town prepared for the [[Emberlight Vigil]], and the Spire quickly became the centre of their plans. The artificer [[Belinda Bubblegum]] offered them a high-stakes contract: plant a magical conduit in the ancient tower during the festival so she could harness its energy, in exchange for crafting them a rare magical item.
#### [[Session 30 - The Darkwood Ambush]]
The party's first attempt to plant Belinda's piton ended in disaster. [[Dondar]] cast *Fly* and *Invisibility* on [[Eryndor]] to carry him unseen to the summit — but on reaching the top, the rogue discovered the Spire's anti-magic field the hard way. His spells failed instantly and he plummeted from the heights, crashing into the courtyard below, with the others unable to intervene through the dampening field. Only quick talking kept the gathering crowd and approaching Emberwardens from realising what had happened.
#### [[Session 31 - The Emberlight Vigil]]
Forced to abandon magic near the tower, the party devised a mechanical solution — modifying a crossbow bolt to carry the piton and firing it into the masonry, timed to the noise of a festival game so the impact went unheard. At midnight the Spire lit and its golden power surged, and [[Belinda Bubblegum|Belinda]] siphoned a fraction of it through the embedded conduit to forge the [[Emberblade]] in her workshop. The night's harvest also went toward the teleportation rod she had spent years working to build.
## Trivia
- The name *Lighthaven* describes the town's lifeline rather than its mood — a fog-bound, snow-locked hollow on the edge of a monstrous wood, it is "haven" only because of the light the Emberspire throws against the dark.
- The Emberwardens' everyday grey-and-gold robes are echoed by the whole town during the [[Emberlight Vigil]], when everyone dons grey cloaks with a yellow stripe — for one night, all of Lighthaven shares the wardens' watch.
