Alone among the four continents it stretches across every latitude — from the northern polar circle, through the equatorial heart of the world, down to the southern circle — and that vast reach has made it the most diverse, most populous, and wealthiest land on Elandis. It is also the most divided: Eldara is split between two great empires, ancient Valdremis in the north and mercantile Solareth in the south, whose long rivalry has shaped the continent for centuries. ## Geography & Landscape Eldara is the great eastern continent of [[Elandis]], and the largest landmass in the world. Its defining feature is its sheer extent: it spans the equator and reaches into both the northern and southern polar circles, so that every climate and region of the world can be found somewhere within its borders. A traveller crossing Eldara from end to end passes through frozen northern country, temperate middle latitudes, equatorial heat, and the cold of the far south in a single journey. Its eastern reaches are vast and only partially charted, trailing away into seas and shores that no single map has fully captured. This range of terrain gives Eldara a landscape of extremes held within one continent — and it is the root of everything else that defines the place, from the diversity of its peoples to the wealth that flows through it. ## History Eldara's history is written largely as the history of its two empires and the shifting line between them. For centuries the north has been held by Valdremis and the south by Solareth, and for centuries the border between them has refused to stay still. The two are often at war, and the boundary moves with the outcomes of those wars and the treaties that end them — advancing and retreating across the generations, so that a town on the frontier may pass between empires several times in the span of a long life. This long, grinding contest between north and south is the central thread of the continent's recorded past, and the engine of much of its present politics. ## Peoples & Powers Eldara is the most diverse continent on Elandis by a wide margin. Because its territory touches every climate the world has to offer, it has given rise to an unmatched variety of peoples, cultures, and traditions — a breadth no single landmass elsewhere can rival. It is also the demographic centre of the world: the most populous continent, and the richest in aggregate, with wealth concentrated by the sheer weight of its numbers and the volume of trade that moves through it. Eldara is the mercantile nexus of Elandis, the hub through which much of the world's commerce flows, and the friction of its two empires sends a steady current of mercenaries, refugees, and merchant-adventurers spilling outward to the rest of the world — [[Valtorra]] among the lands that receive them. Two powers divide the continent between them: - Valdremis, in the north — the old empire, ancient and heavy, its authority built up over centuries. The established power of the continent. - Solareth, in the south — the mercantile empire, its wealth drawn from the trade routes of the equatorial coast. The richer and more commercially driven of the two. ## Dangers - The perpetual war between Valdremis and Solareth, and the unstable, frequently-redrawn frontier between them. - The hazards of a continent that spans every climate — from polar cold in the far north and south to equatorial extremes in its heart. - The lawlessness that follows a long war: displaced people, mercenary companies, and contested ground where neither empire's writ holds firm. ## Significance Eldara is where most of Elandis lives, where most of its wealth moves, and where its longest-running war grinds on without resolution. As the mercantile and demographic heart of the world, it exerts a pull on every other continent — its trade reaches everywhere, and the people its wars displace turn up on shores as distant as Valtorra. To understand the flow of money, goods, and people across Elandis is, in large part, to understand Eldara. ## Trivia - Eldara is the only continent on Elandis to span the equator and both polar circles — a single landmass that contains every climate of the world, which is precisely why its peoples are the most varied anywhere.
