The three Moonstones, named in the moon faith as the Stones of the Moon, are a trio of blessed stones left in the world by [[Elaris Moonsong]] before the gods withdrew from it. They hold no power of their own, yet they are among the most coveted relics in all of [[Elandis]], for the prophecy of the Moon's Chosen holds that whoever gathers all three will open the hidden [[Vault of the Moon|Celestial Cavern]].
## Description
#### Appearance
Each Stone is a smooth, pale moonstone, translucent and milky, with a soft sheen that drifts across its surface like light moving over still water. A faint inner glow lives within them, cool and silver-blue, and it brightens beneath an open night sky — strongest of all when the greater moon Sel rides full. To a careless eye a Stone is indistinguishable from any fine moonstone a jeweller might set; it was as a plain, unremarkable gem that the first was carried for a long time before it ever revealed what it was.
## Properties
The Stones of the Moon are not magic in the way an enchanter's work is magic. They cast no spell, ward no wound, and lend no power to the hand that holds them. Their only manifest property is a pull toward one another: bring one Stone near another and a quiet magnetic draw passes between them, stone leaning toward stone through glass and cloth alike, as though each remembers the others. It is by this pull, the faithful believe, that the scattered Stones are meant to find their way back together.
Their purpose is singular. Gathered as a set of three, they reveal and open the [[Vault of the Moon|Celestial Cavern]], the hidden sanctum of the moon faith. Apart from that calling, a single Stone has been turned to one further use — seated into the face of the [[Moonlit Aegis]], where it woke the shield's lunar light.
## The Prophecy
An old prophecy kept among the clergy of the moon faith speaks of a Moon's Chosen: a mortal marked by [[Elaris Moonsong]] to wander a darkening world, bring hope in their wake, and gather the three Stones of the Moon. When the last is brought to the others, the prophecy promises, the long-hidden [[Vault of the Moon|Celestial Cavern]] will at last reveal itself to the Chosen. The faith treats this not as dead legend but as a standing promise — a door waiting for the one who carries its keys.
## The Three Stones
Two of the Stones are accounted for. One is borne by [[Kai]], the wanderer named a potential Chosen, and now sits set into the [[Moonlit Aegis]] he carries. A second rests in the keeping of High Priest [[High Priest Oldir|Oldir]] at the [[High Sept]] of [[Val Miriel]], set in the altar of [[Elaris Moonsong]]. The whereabouts of the third are unknown to the faith — though it is said the gathered Stones, or the shield that holds one, may yet point the way to it.
## [[The Bloody Nails|Campaign: The Bloody Nails]]
#### [[Session 07 - Grakthor Falls]]
A translucent moonstone, judged at the time to be a plain and non-magical gem, came into [[Kai]]'s keeping — the first of the Stones, though none yet knew it.
#### [[Session 08 - The High Road]]
The moonstone was among the coin and magic items stolen from the party at an inn, before it was recovered and returned to Kai's keeping.
#### [[Session 20 - The Streets of Val Miriel]]
At the [[High Sept]], Kai noticed a moonstone displayed in the altar-case of [[Elaris Moonsong]] that was identical to the one he carried — the first sign that his stone was something more than an ornament.
#### [[Session 26 - A Midnight Romp]]
High Priest [[High Priest Oldir|Oldir]] recounted the full prophecy of the Moon's Chosen and the three Stones. When Kai produced his moonstone and matched it to the gem in Elaris Moonsong's altar, Oldir's scepticism broke, and he named Kai a potential, if troubled, Chosen.
#### [[Session 27 - The Wanted Dwarf]]
Holding his Stone near the altar-case, Kai felt a distinct magnetic pull between his stone and the one within — a silent confirmation of the bond between them.
#### [[Session 42 - Liberation of Val Noren]]
Kai cast *Locate Object* to search the city for another Stone, but the spell found nothing.
#### [[Session 43 - The Shield of the North]]
When the [[Moonlit Aegis]] was forged, Kai's Stone was taken and set into its face, where it slotted magnetically into place and woke the shield's power to blind those who strike its bearer.
#### [[Session 49 - The Silver Sage]]
The ancient dragon [[Praetor'Varanous]] confirmed that two of the three Stones were known — the one in the shield and the one held by Oldir — and that "the shield will point the way" to the third, though only on the material plane.
## Trivia
- The Stones are routinely mistaken for ordinary moonstones, and the world is full of common moonstones cut for jewellery; the difference shows only when a true Stone draws near one of its siblings.
