**The Emberwardens** are the custodial order that tends the [[Emberspire]], the ancient tower whose light holds back the horrors of the [[Darkwood]] and keeps [[Lighthaven]] alive. Theirs is the single most vital trust in the town — the closely guarded secret of how to wake the Spire's flame — and though they make no claim to priesthood, the townsfolk regard them with a quiet reverence reserved for those who stand between the living and the dark.
## Purpose & Goals
The Emberwardens exist for one purpose: to keep the Spire lit. The tower's summit blazes only when its great brazier is raised to exactly the right heat and luminosity, and the skill of balancing that ancient enchantment is the order's sacred charge. Every other duty flows from this — the maintenance of the tower, the watch kept over it, and the stewardship of the [[Emberlight Vigil]], the town's annual thanksgiving to the protector that has never once failed it.
They are wardens and protectors in the fullest sense, devoted not to a god but to the flame itself and to the town that depends on it. So long as the Spire burns, Lighthaven endures; should it ever go dark, the Darkwood would not be long in answering. The Emberwardens carry that knowledge as both privilege and burden.
## Structure & Leadership
The order is small by design — a few dozen members at most — and deliberately kept that way. The secret of the brazier is too important to spread widely, so it is held close and passed down within the order rather than taught to the town at large. New members are not born to the role but drawn into it: trusted, lifelong townsfolk are occasionally invited to take up the watch, vetted over years before the order's knowledge is shared with them.
At its head stands **Elda Arkwright**, who presides over the order and over the Emberlight Vigil, addressing the gathered town each year from a balcony partway up the Spire. Beneath her the wardens share the daily labour of tending the tower in rotation, so that the flame is never left unattended.
## Vestments & Iconography
The Emberwardens are known at a glance by their dress. In their daily duties they wear **dark grey robes with a gold stripe down the back**; for the [[Emberlight Vigil]] they don **deep golden cloaks** in honour of the night. The colours are so closely tied to the order that, during the Vigil, the whole town dresses in grey cloaks with a yellow stripe — a gesture that for one night every soul in Lighthaven shares the warden's watch.
## History
The [[Emberspire]] is older than Lighthaven itself — a relic of a forgotten civilisation, raised long before the town grew up around its base. For as many generations as anyone can recount, the Emberwardens have been its keepers, preserving the secret of its flame unbroken through every winter and every incursion from the [[Darkwood]]. Their origins are lost to the same antiquity that swallowed the Spire's makers; what survives is the unbroken chain of the watch, handed down warden to warden across the centuries.
## Relations
### Valtorran Empire
The Emberwardens hold no allegiance to the [[Valtorran Empire|Empire]] that nominally governs Lighthaven. They are a purely local institution, answering to the town and the tower rather than to imperial authority, and the garrison's soldiers have no part in the order's work. The wardens' loyalty begins and ends with the Spire.
## [[The Bloody Nails|Campaign: The Bloody Nails]]
#### [[Session 30 - The Darkwood Ambush]]
When [[Eryndor]] flew invisibly to the Spire's summit to plant [[Belinda Bubblegum|Belinda]]'s siphoning piton, the tower's anti-magic field stripped away his spells and sent him plummeting into the courtyard below. The Wardens gathered swiftly at the disturbance, and only [[Vaeleran]]'s quick deception — passing the broken rogue off as his "special" brother who had simply climbed too high — kept the party from arrest.
#### [[Session 31 - The Emberlight Vigil]]
As stewards of the festival, the Emberwardens presided over the year's Vigil while, unbeknownst to them, the party's piton drank a thread of the Spire's power for Belinda's craft. From her balcony on the tower, Elda Arkwright led the gathered town through the ceremony and the silent minute of the watch as the Spire kindled gold above them.
