**Kaelen Vayne** is an elven Meridian and de facto head of the [[Sumara, The Shining City#The Confluence of the Seven|Confluence of the Seven]], the ruling council of [[Sumara, The Shining City|Sumara]]. He represents the Circle of the Blade, and in the century since the Exile he has become the council's most powerful voice — the man who turned silence and stability into an ideology. Heavily scarred, watchful, and dangerous when quiet, he is not cruel; he is a person who decided long ago that the best way to protect people is to control everything, and has not yet been shown to be wrong enough to stop.
## Biography
Kaelen has sat on the Confluence for decades, and the city has survived. That survival — carefully maintained, sealed off, politically managed — is the argument he makes every day simply by existing. Whatever grief or fire shaped the scarring on his face, he has long since alchemised it into a kind of cold, load-bearing authority. When his son was lost to the [[Vale of Eternal Night]], something in him hardened further. He has been different ever since, according to those who knew him before.
He maintains alliances with Justiciar Naivara Siannodel of the Scales and Archivist Elrohir Gemflower of the Scroll — a voting bloc sufficient to stall most motions he opposes. His opposition is rarely loud. He waits, watches, and lets the room exhaust itself before speaking.
## [[The Bloody Nails|Campaign: The Bloody Nails]]
#### [[Session 47 - Confluence of the Seven]]
Confronted [[Ayana Syndrosa]]'s return and [[Ryo]]'s claim to the [[Silmara Family\|Silmara]] bloodline before the full Confluence. Delivered a pointed address to the council — *"We built this council to protect the elven people. We needed no king for a hundred years"* — and allied with Naivara and Elrohir to block the motion on legal grounds. When [[Illythia Voss]] invoked Article 12 of the Accords and the vote to open the [[Vault of Memories]] passed five to two, Kaelen walked out across his light-bridge without a word.
#### [[Session 50 - A New Morning in Sumara]]
Though absent, Kaelen loomed over the party's morning in [[Sumara, The Shining City|Sumara]]. In the Heartstone Commons, the farmer Gav described him as the pillar who had held the city together after the loss of the Silmaras, through the worst of the skirmishes with the Hunt. [[Warden Sylvaris]], confirming [[Ryo]]'s lineage, was less reverent — *"That old fool Kaelen, I don't know how he could possibly have seen otherwise."* Most significantly, Sylvaris reopened the wound of his lost son: [[Asha Vayne|Asha]] had vanished on the borders of the [[Vale of Eternal Night]] sixty years ago, presumed killed alongside an important member of the Hunt, but never recovered. She doubted [[Mirileth|the Star-Veiled Queen]]'s style would have permitted a simple disappearance — *"Wouldn't be surprised if there was more to the story"* — a thread the party resolved to pull as they prepared to enter the Vale.
#### [[Session 51 - The Last Light]]
The shape of Kaelen's grief came clearer through [[Skyguard Caeryn]]'s account at the Ironsward. After [[Asha Vayne|Asha]] was lost on the borders of the [[Vale of Eternal Night]] some sixty years ago — in a costly clash that may also have claimed a senior figure of the Hunt — Kaelen pulled the border patrols back to the city rather than risk open war, and has blamed himself for the loss ever since.
#### [[Session 52 - The Star-Veiled Queen]]
Though far away in [[Sumara, The Shining City|Sumara]], Kaelen's lost son surfaced in the party's audience with [[Mirileth]], who confirmed that [[Asha Vayne|Asha]] yet lives within her court. The party recognised that returning him could go a long way toward smoothing the frayed relations between the two courts — making Kaelen's old wound a possible key to the diplomacy ahead.
#### [[Session 55 - The Long Hunt]]
Kaelen's son is on his way home. Freed from the [[Vale of Eternal Night]] and woken as himself with no memory of the last sixty years, [[Asha Vayne|Asha]] rode with the party to the gates of [[Sumara, The Shining City|Sumara]], having offered to ask his father to find a home for the elven girl brought out of the Vale with him. Kaelen does not yet know.
