For nearly a decade it was the site of [[Skyreach]] — a secret Imperial viaduct raised to vault the gorge — until the bridge was brought down, leaving its shattered remains strewn across and within the chasm. A natural barrier that the [[Valtorran Empire|Empire]] spent a fortune trying to overcome, the Aeolian remains one of the defining strategic features of the southern frontier. ## Location & Geography The chasm sits in the far south of [[Valtorra]], roughly fifty miles west of [[Darmouth]]. It runs broadly north-to-south for about a hundred miles, descending from a small mountain range — the Aeolian Mountains — down to the southern ocean coast, where it opens onto wide coastal cliffs. Along its entire floor runs the Aeolian River, the water that carved the gorge over ages. The river's parentage explains the shared name. The Luminor River rises in the central plains, where [[Val Luminor]] is built upon its banks, then forks in the south: the eastern branch runs through [[Val Miriel]] into the [[Gulf of Miriel]], while the southern branch becomes the Aeolian River as it cuts down through the mountains and the chasm to the sea. It is the same water under a regional name — which is why the chasm, the mountains, and the river all share the word "Aeolian." ## History For the better part of a decade the Empire poured labour and secrecy into [[Skyreach]], an Imperial viaduct "of unimaginable size" raised to span the chasm. It was more than a bridge: it was also where the Empire funnelled its prisoners and self-declared "enemies of the empire," worked in the labour camp that grew beneath the rising structure. Skyreach never carried its intended traffic. Working from stolen schematics, [[The Bloody Nails]] and the [[The Mawbreakers|Mawbreakers]] sailed for the chasm, infiltrated the viaduct, and brought it down — collapsing the colossus into the gorge and freeing the prisoners the Empire had been holding there. The ruins remain to this day, and will for a long time yet: the shattered arches and toppled pillars of the great viaduct still lie broken across and within the chasm, a lasting monument to the rebellion's strike against the Empire. ## Strategic Significance The Aeolian Chasm is a natural blocker for [[Darmouth]], a relatively new Imperial city. Without a crossing, Darmouth cannot easily move its docked supplies inland — caravans would have to detour the long way around through the mountains, which is impractical at the scale the Empire needed. The Empire's alternative port is [[Val Miriel]], from which supplies can run up-river toward the capital at [[Val Luminor]]. But the Gulf of Miriel is treacherous to enter because of [[The Maw]], leaving the Empire dangerously dependent on the [[The Mawbreakers|Mawbreakers]] honouring their Imperial contracts. Skyreach was meant to be the answer: bridge the chasm, make Darmouth the major southern port, and run new highways straight across the gorge and into the central plains of the continent. Bringing the viaduct down kept that bottleneck firmly shut. ### [[The Bloody Nails|Campaign: The Bloody Nails]] #### [[Session 08 - The High Road]] In the [[The Mawbreakers|Mawbreakers']] headquarters in [[Camaar]], the stolen Imperial package was revealed to contain the schematics for [[Skyreach]] — a massive, secret viaduct being built over the Aeolian Chasm. Captain [[Barak Stormrider]] laid out the plan that would define the chapters to come: use the plans to find the structure's weak points and destroy it, severing the Empire's supply line to the capital and forcing them back through [[The Maw]]. #### [[Session 15 - Operation Skyreach]] After a voyage south aboard [[The Albatross]], the party reached the chasm to find Skyreach was no mere camp but a fortress, its great wall blocking the river. They finalised their plan at the gorge: while the [[The Mawbreakers|Mawbreakers]] launched a loud frontal assault on the labour camp, the party would infiltrate the viaduct to plant explosives and sever the bridge that spanned the Aeolian. #### [[Session 16 - The Fall of Skyreach]] Amid the burning camp, the party freed the prisoners and climbed the viaduct's four-hundred-foot pillars, planting charges at its weak points. As they fled to [[The Albatross]] with the wounded [[Barak Stormrider|Barak]], the fuses burned down and Skyreach collapsed in a thunderous cataclysm of rubble and dust — crippling the Empire's strategic infrastructure and leaving the chasm strewn with the ruins that mark it still. ## Trivia - The Aeolian name belongs not just to the chasm but to the mountains it descends from and the river that carved it — all one continuous waterway, named for the region rather than for any of its three parts.
