**Ryordan Silmara**, First of His Name, was the founding hero of the [[Silmara Family]] — an elven soldier whose name, deeds, and binding sacrifice echo across every generation of his line. He stood alongside vast celestial powers at a cosmic battle at the roots of the [[World Tree]], sundered one of its great roots to save the tree from annihilation, and in doing so tied his bloodline irrevocably to the tree's life and magic for all time. The petrified remnant of that root now lies beneath [[Sumara, The Shining City]] as the [[Heartstone]] — the magical pulse of the city above.
## Biography
#### The Cosmic Battle
The nature of the threat that called the first Ryordan to war is lost to history. What survives — preserved in the oldest Sumaran records and in the root-memory of the [[Vault of Memories]] — is the shape of it: a battle of cosmic scale, at the roots of the [[World Tree]] itself, in which the tree's survival hung in the balance. Elven armies fought alongside vast, blue-skinned, many-winged celestial beings — entities whose scale dwarfed any mortal present. Ryordan commanded among them.
#### The Sundering
At the turning point of the battle, Ryordan made the act that defined his legacy. He sundered one of the great roots of the [[World Tree]] — driving his blade into it, separating it from the tree, leaving it behind as the price of the tree's salvation. By removing the root, whatever had targeted it through it could no longer reach the tree. The severed root, over uncounted centuries, petrified into stone. It is now the pillar of white rock the [[Royal Citadel of Sumara]] stands upon — the [[Heartstone]], primordial organic material that retains the World Tree's magical properties to this day.
In the act of sundering, Ryordan bound his bloodline to the root. Every descendant of the Silmara line carries that bond — a tie to the [[World Tree]]'s life and magic, passed unbroken through every generation that followed. It is not merely symbolic: it grants the Silmara heirs their unique access to the [[World Gates]] and the [[Vault of Memories]], and is felt across the bloodline as the weight of custodianship — the sense of being caretakers of something older than themselves.
#### Legacy
The [[Silmara Family]] takes its name, its mandate, and much of its identity from him. The Sumaran elves describe the royal bloodline as "Blessed by Mother" — the [[World Tree]] — and Ryordan is the reason why. His image was preserved within the [[Vault of Memories]] and shown to his distant descendant [[Ryo]] in a vision: an elven soldier standing among towering celestial witnesses at a battle that ended an age, driving a blade into a root that split the sky.
### [[The Bloody Nails|Campaign: The Bloody Nails]]
#### [[Session 49 - The Silver Sage]]
[[Praetor'Varanous]] showed [[Ryo]] a vision of the first Ryordan within the [[Vault of Memories]] — an elven soldier standing among vast blue-skinned, winged celestial entities at a cosmic battle, a great root piercing earth and sky. The dragon named him as the Silmara who bound his people to the sundered root of the [[World Tree]] and held the cosmos in balance.
#### [[Session 51 - The Last Light - Sonnet]]
The party researched Ryordan in the restricted archives of the [[Circle of the Scroll]] in [[Sumara, The Shining City|Sumara]], assembling a fuller picture of the Sundering from fragmentary and often contradictory historical accounts. The records confirmed his common origins and his rallying of divine and celestial powers. They also established the consequence the Codex of Sumara's own records had not: when the World Tree's roots shattered, a section of sky fell on the northern Vale, carving the crater in which [[Caer Nystral, The Dawnless City]] now stands and sealing those lands under eternal darkness.
## Trivia
- The binding he forged means every living Silmara is a literal custodian of the World Tree's root — the tie runs in both directions: the bloodline to the tree, and the tree's residual magic to the bloodline.
- His name has been passed down through the Silmara line across countless generations. The most recent bearer, [[Ryo]], asked [[Praetor'Varanous]] never to be called Ryordan again after learning the full weight of what the name carried.
- [[Praetor'Varanous]] smelled the blood of Silmara before seeing [[Ryo]] and [[Eryndor]], and was briefly taken aback that there were two of them.
