He dresses conspicuously above his station — heavy chains, embroidered finery, rings that catch every candle — as though the weight of gold might compensate for a title that commands little real respect in the city's upper circles. ## Biography Norak Vara owns the [[The Ruby Falls Goldmine]] in the foothills north of [[Val Miriel]], a profitable holding that grants him both wealth and a precarious foothold in the city's merchant-noble class. He operates through the [[The Green Gryphons]] guild, using their connections to contract out security and labour rather than maintaining his own household forces. When contact with the mine was severed and his contracted investigators began disappearing, Vara turned to the guild again — this time engaging a mercenary company to find out what had gone wrong. The [[Valtorran Empire]] had already dispatched two separate squads of soldiers to investigate the silence; neither returned, and the Empire quietly withdrew its interest, leaving Vara to absorb the cost and the risk alone. His manor sits on [[The Royal Way]], staffed by a small household including his haughty butler Nihilus. Vara is not a man who inspires confidence — he is quick to dismiss concerns he finds inconvenient and slow to acknowledge threats that might reflect badly on his own judgement. ### [[The Bloody Nails|Campaign: The Bloody Nails]] #### [[Session 20 - The Streets of Val Miriel]] Named as the client behind the [[The Ruby Falls Goldmine]] contract, which had gone silent; the party learned that investigators sent to the mine had vanished without a trace. #### [[Session 22 - Inferno at Serenity Plaza]] The party visited Vara's manor on [[The Royal Way]] to discuss the mine contract. He and his butler Nihilus confirmed that two Imperial squads had already vanished at the site, that the Empire had abandoned the matter, and that he was now relying on mercenaries to resolve it. When [[Vaeleran]] pressed him on Nihilus's loyalty, Vara dismissed the concern. #### [[Session 25 - The Chimera]] The party invoked Vara's name and the [[The Green Gryphons]] contract as cover when bluffing their way past the mine's gate captain.
