**Lirien** is a half-elven priestess and druid who spent her life deep in the wilds, raising a generation of orphaned children in a woodland sanctuary she built and tended with her own hands. Reverent toward nature and unshakeable in her sense of duty, she became both mother and teacher to those in her care — shaping them as much through rite of passage and hard lessons as through warmth.
## Description
#### Appearance
Lirien carries the unhurried grace of someone long at home in forest and field. Her silver-streaked hair is worn in a loose braid that catches pine needles as easily as compliments, and her face is lined with the kind of weathering that comes from decades beneath open sky rather than old age. She dresses in layered earth-toned robes stitched with woven bark and dried herbs, and she moves quietly — the careful tread of a woman who has spent years not wishing to startle animals or sleeping children.
#### Personality
Lirien is measured and warm, but not soft. She holds her charges to high standards because she believes the wilds do not grant mercy to the unprepared, and neither does the world beyond them. She speaks plainly and listens carefully. Beneath her calm exterior lies a woman who has outlived loss more than once and met it without breaking — a stillness earned rather than given.
## Biography
#### Background
A traveling half-elven priestess, Lirien discovered the aftermath of a burning village and, finding a child among the survivors, did not pass by. That single act of staying became the foundation of a life's work. Deep in the forests she gathered other half-elf children left adrift by violence and misfortune, establishing an orphanage that served as sanctuary, school, and home. There she and her community raised their wards in reverence of nature, teaching survival craft alongside the rhythms of the wild.
As each child reached the age of sixteen, Lirien set them a rite of passage — a solo trial designed to push them beyond what comfort could teach. [[Kai]], one of her most beloved wards, was sent to the snow-capped mountains to survive alone and return with proof of a successful hunt. He succeeded. But when he came home, the orphanage was empty. Lirien, her community, and all the other children had vanished without a trace. It would be years before the truth emerged: she had been taken by the [[Valtorran Empire|Empire]], stripped from the forest she had made her world, and transported to the labour camps of [[Skyreach]].
### [[The Bloody Nails|Campaign: The Bloody Nails]]
#### [[Session 16 - The Fall of Skyreach]]
Among the enslaved in [[Skyreach]]'s labour camp, [[Kai]] recognised a face he had feared he would never see again — Lirien, his foster mother. He cast *Cat's Grace* on her and entrusted her to free the remaining prisoners and lead them to the river while the party continued their assault on the viaduct. She did exactly that. After the pillars fell and the dust settled, Lirien and Kai found a moment to speak aboard [[The Albatross]]. She shared a rumour she had gathered during her captivity: that missing elves were being held in the dungeons of [[Val Luminor]]. She also recognised [[Kai]]'s companion [[Ryo]]'s signet ring, identifying it as the symbol of the [[Silmara Family]] — the ruling class of the lost city of [[Ithilmara]].
#### [[Session 37 - March of the Dead]]
After the gruelling fighting retreat to [[Val Noren]], Lirien was among the allies gathered inside the city's walls when [[The Mawbreakers]] and the party reunited. She accompanied [[Kai]] and [[Ryo]] to Saint Avelines, a chapel that had been converted into a triage centre, where she worked alongside [[Illaris Sharin]] to tend the wounded in the aftermath of the siege.
#### [[Session 42 - Liberation of Val Noren]]
In the days following [[Val Noren]]'s liberation, Lirien took quiet charge of [[Barak Stormrider|Barak]]'s recovery, tending his wounds with the same hands that had once bandaged scraped knees and arrow-cuts in the forest. The two grew close during those weeks — a bond that deepened into something unspoken, noticed by the rest of [[The Mawbreakers]] before either of them acknowledged it themselves.
## Trivia
- Lirien's rite of passage tradition reflects a druidic philosophy that knowledge only becomes wisdom when tested alone and far from safety. Each ward received a different task, chosen to challenge what Lirien saw as their particular weakness or greatest fear.
