**King Marius Noren**, known to his people as *The Reclaimer*, is the human ruler of [[Val Noren]] and the figurehead of the first major uprising against [[The Valtorran Empire]] since the Dwarven Rebellion decades prior. Descended from a noble line that governed the city before Imperial occupation, he was never a man who sought power — but a man the moment seemed to choose regardless.
## Biography
Marius was born into the governorship of [[Val Noren]], heir to a family whose royal claim stretched back a century before the Empire swallowed the north. By his own temperament he was a pious, quietly domestic figure: a follower of [[Torgar Earthshaker]] with a modest clerical gift, more likely to be found helping a tradesman clear rubble than sitting in council chambers. It was [[Ayana Syndrosa]], operating under the alias Ayana Wynne, who shaped what he became — guiding him over years from a reluctant governor into the reluctant king the rebellion needed.
When the uprising finally came, Marius did not take to its theatrics. He wore plain clothes when protocol permitted, converted the Keep's great hall into a refugee shelter during the Imperial siege, and was still moving among displaced families when [[The Bloody Nails]] were brought before him. What concerned him most in that first meeting was not the military stalemate on the river barricades, but the mention of [[The Red Priests]] — a threat he recognised as something beyond ordinary Imperial cruelty.
That caution proved well-founded. Imperial agents used an undead assault on the barricades as cover to breach the Keep and seize him. He was held in the lower crypts of [[The Stoneheart]], bound and subjected to mental torment, before the party fought their way through to free him. When the battle in the cathedral turned against them, Marius shook off his stupor and cast *Healing Word* to pull [[Kai]] back from the edge.
After the liberation of [[Val Noren]], Marius received the party at court, rewarded them with platinum, potions, and a family heirloom blade of [[Renite Steel]], and began turning his attention toward [[Val Miriel]] and the wider fate of the north.
### [[The Bloody Nails|Campaign: The Bloody Nails]]
#### [[Session 37 - March of the Dead]]
First encountered by the party in the Keep of [[Val Noren]], where he was personally ensuring the safety of displaced civilians. Met with them to discuss the siege and the threat of [[The Red Priests]]. Kidnapped at the session's end when Imperial agents used the undead assault on the barricades as a diversion.
#### [[Session 39 - The Stoneheart]]
Discovered bound and under guard in the royal crypt of [[The Stoneheart]], held by a [[The Red Priests|Red Priest]] following interrogation and mental torture. Freed by the party after they fought through the temple's undead defences.
#### [[Session 40 - General Blackmarsh]]
Cast *Healing Word* to revive [[Kai]] at a critical moment during the confrontation with [[Dread General Blackmarsh]]. Escaped with the party through the smuggler's tunnels.
#### [[Session 41 - Reclaim the Reclaimer]]
Participated in the war council alongside [[Ayana Syndrosa|Ayana Wynne]] and [[Barak Stormrider]], endorsing the two-pronged strategy to break the Imperial siege.
#### [[Session 42 - Liberation of Val Noren]]
Led the Loyalist charge across the pontoon bridge. Confronted the Imperial commander personally; took a wound when the commander refused to surrender. Declared [[Val Noren]] the **Shield of the North** in the aftermath of victory.
#### [[Session 43 - The Shield of the North]]
Received the party in a formal audience following liberation. Rewarded them with 20,000 gold in platinum, three Greater Healing Potions, and a [[Renite Steel]] Dagger. Discussed aid for [[Val Miriel]] and negotiations with the Imperial governor.
