**Gemma Finegold** is the leader of [[The Finegolds]], a respected independent merchant company operating across [[Valtorra]]. Sharp-minded and quietly driven, she spent years as the true engine of the business while her father [[Harland Finegold]] served as its public face — managing the books, overseeing logistics, and devising strategy from behind the scenes. When Harland was murdered by an Imperial assassin in the [[Farhaven Forest]], she assumed command without hesitation. The grief was real. So was the resolve.
Her path crossed with [[The Bloody Nails]] on the road to [[Darmouth]], where she found them stranded and vulnerable after a shipwreck. The meeting appeared accidental. In hindsight, it was anything but — the ragged group she took under her wing as hired guards were the same prisoners who had escaped the ship bound for [[Skyreach]], the very Imperial project she had been tasked to undermine.
## Description
#### Appearance
Gemma is a young human woman in her early 20s, standing at an average height with a slim and agile build. Her long, bright red hair, vibrant and fiery in hue, is typically tied back into a practical ponytail while traveling, keeping it out of her way. Her sharp green eyes, alive with intelligence and curiosity, often seem to be assessing the world around her with a discerning gaze.
Unlike her father’s more ostentatious attire, Gemma opts for practical clothing suited to her lifestyle. She favours earthy tones of brown and green, which complement her striking eyes and hint at her grounded nature.
A light dusting of freckles dances across her nose and cheeks, adding a touch of youthful charm to her otherwise focused and capable demeanour.
#### Personality
Gemma’s default register is warmth — quick to smile, quick with a remark, the kind of person who lightens a room without trying. But the lightness sits atop something heavier. She has lost both parents to Imperial cruelty, one to a public execution when she was nine years old and one to an assassin’s blade years later, and those who know her well can sense where the humour ends and the grief begins. Her sharp mind and perceptive nature make her difficult to deceive; years of merchant negotiations have made her a natural reader of people and a precise judge of character.
She has a deep and genuine affection for [[The Bloody Nails]], who saved her life and the lives of everyone she cares about. Weeks of shared road — and one desperate ambush in the Farhaven ruins — have hardened that bond into something she doesn’t question. She trusts them. In Gemma’s world, that is rare.
When the conversation turns to [[The Valtorran Empire|The Empire]], the warmth vanishes entirely. Her hatred is quiet and total — less rage than cold, settled conviction. She has spent years working against the Empire from the margins, and her father’s death has only sharpened that purpose. She is not interested in justice in any abstract sense. She wants it dismantled.
## Biography
#### Background
Gemma was born in the year 2475 in the city of [[Silverdeep]]. Her family led a modest but fulfilling life as merchants, trading goods with the nearby [[Dwarven]] cities and always returning to their beloved home. For the first nine years of her life, Gemma’s days were marked by warmth and routine—until tragedy shattered her world. One fateful day, her mother tried to protect a thief who had stolen a loaf of bread. In an act of merciless authority, both her mother and the thief were executed publicly by the [[The Valtorran Empire|Empire]], leaving Gemma and her father devastated.
The aftermath changed them both forever. Her father, [[Harland Finegold|Harland]], lost his passion for work, becoming increasingly distant and spending more time trying to guide Gemma to becoming who she is today. Gemma, however, channelled her grief and anger into a burning hatred for the Empire, vowing to oppose them and aid anyone crushed under their oppressive rule.
In recent years, Gemma made a name for herself within [[The Finegolds]]. While her father remained the figurehead, it was her sharp mind that kept the merchant operations thriving. Her most significant connection came through a cargo run for [[The Mawbreakers]], where she met [[Barak Stormrider]]. The two struck up a close friendship, and Barak eventually confided in her his plans to dismantle the Imperial project [[Skyreach]]. He recognised her value immediately — a legitimate merchant could move between cities with minimal suspicion, and her expertise in concealing contraband was exactly the kind of skill the network needed.
![[Gemma_Finegold_Mourning_small.webp|right|261]]
Her first major assignment for Barak took her south to [[Darmouth]], where she was to retrieve [[Skyreach]] blueprints held by [[The Order of Ravens]]. En route, she encountered [[The Bloody Nails]] — recently escaped from Imperial captivity following a shipwreck on the Valtorran coast. Recognising both their plight and their potential, she folded them into the caravan as hired guards, a decision that proved pivotal when their knowledge of [[Skyreach]] dovetailed with her own mission.
The cost of that mission came later. A trap laid by the Imperial assassin [[Seraphina]] drew both Gemma and [[The Bloody Nails]] into the [[Farhaven Forest]], where [[Harland Finegold|Harland]] was murdered and the rest of [[The Finegolds]] taken captive. The party arrived in time to fight off Seraphina and free the survivors, but not in time to save her father. Gemma buried him in the ruins of Farhaven and resumed her work the following morning — not because she had processed the grief, but because she refused to let it stop her.
She leads [[The Finegolds]] now. Quietly, competently, and with the same sharp eye her father spent years cultivating in her. She continues to operate as an intelligence asset for the anti-Imperial network, passing information between cells and leveraging her merchant cover to move where soldiers cannot.
### [[The Bloody Nails|Campaign: The Bloody Nails]]
#### [[Session 01 - The Rusty Nail]]
The party, freshly escaped from a shipwreck on the Valtorran coast, flagged down [[The Finegolds]]' caravan on the road to [[Darmouth]]. Gemma, travelling alongside healer [[Maeve Greycloud]], recognised the stranded group's vulnerability and struck a deal: the party would serve as hired guards in exchange for safe passage into the city — giving them cover from Imperial suspicion.
#### [[Session 02 - Midnight Fangs]]
The caravan journey north continued under Gemma's watchful eye. The group settled into the rhythm of the road, with Gemma managing logistics and keeping spirits measured. A tense first-night watch revealed the sound of hyenas tracking the convoy from a distance, though the threat never materialised.
#### [[Session 03 - The Streets of Darmouth]]
At the gates of [[Darmouth]], Gemma urged the party to keep their heads down as guards singled out two members for questioning. Later that evening, in a private meeting at [[The Seafarer's Rest]], she broke the pretence entirely — admitting she had known the party were escaped prisoners since the moment they met on the road. She revealed her work with the rebellion, her connection to underground cells pursuing information about the Imperial project [[Skyreach]], and the significance of the operatives [[Ella Sable]] and [[Uric Graad]].
#### [[Session 04 - To Free a Raven]]
After [[The Bloody Nails]] broke [[Ella Sable]] out of Imperial custody, Gemma and [[Uric Graad]] met them outside the city walls. She equipped [[Neros]] with two Potions of Healing and, pragmatically, offered to handle [[The Green Gryphons]] contract paperwork on the party's behalf so they could avoid returning to the city.
#### [[Session 05 - The Baited Ambush]]
The party rendezvoused with [[The Finegolds]] on the High Road, narrowly avoiding an Imperial patrol. Gemma confirmed she had secured the "[[Skyreach]] package" and promised to share the full details when the time was right.
#### [[Session 07 - Grakthor Falls]]
After the party cleared the goblin threat plaguing the road, Gemma agreed to return to [[Darmouth]] on their behalf — submitting the [[The Green Gryphons]] contract and collecting the reward, freeing the party to press on toward [[Camaar]].
#### [[Session 08 - The High Road]]
Gemma and [[Doran Ironfist]] rejoined the convoy, distributing 820 gold from the goblin contract. In a private moment, she showed [[Vaeleran]] a "Wanted" poster bearing a sketch of a scarred older man resembling him — worth 5,000 gold — and, correctly deducing he was an enemy of the Empire, invited him to join her cause. She then led the party to [[The Mawbreakers]]' guildhall at the [[Camaar]] docks to meet [[Barak Stormrider]], where the contents of the Skyreach package — detailed blueprints for a secret bridge spanning the [[Aeolian Chasm]] — were finally revealed.
#### [[Session 09 - The Veiled Den]]
After a brutal fight in [[Camaar]], the party retreated to [[The Lion]] inn. Gemma greeted them on their return, noted their injuries with quiet concern, and helped secure lodgings for three nights while they recovered.
#### [[Session 19 - Blood and Sorrow]]
Tragedy struck in the [[Farhaven Forest]], where the party discovered the crude grave of [[Harland Finegold]] — his throat slashed. Tracking deeper into the ruins, they found Gemma and the rest of [[The Finegolds]] held captive by the assassin [[Seraphina]]. After a fierce battle, Seraphina was slain. Gemma, shaken but composed, revealed that the assassin had forced [[Lilliana Featherfoot]] to lure the party into the ambush. Harland was given a proper burial, and Gemma quietly asked [[Vaeleran]] to use his contacts to investigate the name "Corvas."
#### [[Session 20 - The Streets of Val Miriel]]
In the aftermath of her father's death, [[Kai]] sought Gemma out and offered what comfort he could. She received it with quiet gratitude, but her grief had already hardened into something resolute — a renewed and burning conviction to fight the Empire whatever the cost.
#### [[Session 21 - The Governor's Daughter]]
Gemma delivered the intelligence [[Vaeleran]] had requested: the name "Korvas" was linked to the former head of the Imperial Garrison in [[Val Noren]], a man who had mysteriously disappeared months prior.
#### [[Session 28 - The Underrun]]
A chance encounter on the streets of [[Val Miriel]] reunited the party with Gemma. [[The Finegolds]] were in the process of securing an Imperial travel licence, likely bound for [[Val Aerie]]. The party, needing to travel light, handed off their cart and horses to her care. Before parting, [[Vaeleran]] warned her of dangerous "walking dead" near [[Val Aran]] and hinted at a potential ally among the clergy at [[Val Aerie]].
## Trivia
- Gemma was the first friendly NPC [[The Bloody Nails]] met
- On a whim during [[Session 01 - The Rusty Nail]], Riv decided to use a Scottish accent for Gemma, as she grew up in [[Silverdeep]] around many [[Dwarven|Dwarves]]. She was never intended to be a long term character, but instead ended up being a long term friend of the party and so Riv had to practice Scottish accents in order to keep it going.
